Born on December 5, 1985, into a Punjabi Hindu family, Shikhar Dhawan completed his schooling at St. Mark’s Senior Secondary Public School in Paschim Vihar, Delhi. His passion for cricket ignited while watching his cousin play, leading his parents to enroll him at Sonnet Club at age 12. Under coach Tarak Sinha’s guidance, he transitioned from wicket-keeper to an opening batsman, achieving a century in an U-15 tournament.

Career

Dhawan’s cricketing career began with the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 1999, where he was the leading run-scorer for Delhi. This success led to selection in India’s Under-17 squad and later the Under-19 World Cup in 2004, where he set a record with 505 runs in seven innings.

His first-class debut came in November 2004 against Andhra Pradesh. He consistently performed well in the Duleep Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. His international ODI debut was in October 2010 against Australia, followed by his Test debut in 2013 against Australia, where he notably scored the fastest century on Test debut.

His IPL journey included stints with Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Deccan Chargers, before captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad. He retired from both domestic and international cricket on August 24, 2024.
