She honed her skills at the Indian Railway Institute in Secunderabad under Mehboob Ali, later joining Pullela Gopichand’s academy, where she continues to train under him (as of 2024). She later pursued an MBA at St. Ann’s College for Women.

Sindhu’s international badminton career began in 2009 at the Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo, where she won a bronze medal. This was followed by a silver medal at the 2010 Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge. Her rise continued with a gold medal at the 2011 Douglas Commonwealth Youth Games.

A significant turning point came in 2012 when she defeated Li Xuerui, the 2012 London Olympics gold medalist. In 2013, she became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Badminton World Championships. Her performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics saw her reach the finals, securing a silver medal. She later won the World Tour title in 2018 and secured her second Olympic medal (bronze) at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, making her the first Indian woman to achieve this feat. Further adding to her accolades, she won the Singapore Open title in July 2022.
