Born Shantanu Mukherjee on September 30, 1972, in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, Shaan’s zodiac sign is Libra. He spent his formative years in Bandra, Mumbai, attending a Jesuit school. His musical journey began with training under the esteemed Ghulam Mustafa Khan. He also briefly attended Suresh Wadkar’s Ajivasan Music Academy, though he discontinued due to self-perceived unsatisfactory performance.

Family, Caste & Wife

Shaan hails from a Bengali Brahmin family. His father, Manas Mukherjee, was a respected music composer and singer. His mother, Sonali Mukherjee, also a singer, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 20, 2022. His grandfather, Jahar Mukherjee, was a lyricist. He has an elder sister, Sagarika, who is also a singer. Shaan married Radhika Mukherjee in 2003, and they have two sons, Shubh and Soham Mukherjee.

Career

Shaan’s career began early with jingles. After a brief hiatus, he returned to singing jingles, remixes, and cover versions. At 17, he contributed to the song “Kitni Hai Pyari Pyari Dosti Hamari” from the film “Parinda (1989).” He and his sister then signed with Magnasound, releasing successful albums like “Naujawan” and “Q – Funk”. His breakthrough came with remix albums like “Roop Tera Mastana”. He’s also released several solo albums, including “Loveology”, “Tanha Dil”, “Aksar”, and “Tishnagi”.

His Bollywood debut was with the songs “Musu Musu Hasi” and “Wo Pehli Baar” from “Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi (1999)”. He has sung numerous hit Bollywood numbers, including “Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai,” “Main Aisa Kyun Hoon,” “Bum Bum Bole,” “Jab Se Tere Naina,” and “Cinema Dekhe Mamma”.

Shaan’s versatility extends beyond Hindi cinema. He has also sung in various regional languages such as Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, and Marathi.

Beyond singing, Shaan has also composed music and written lyrics for his albums. He’s also ventured into acting, appearing in films like “Tarkieb (2000)”, “Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence (2001)”, “Hungama (2003)”, and “Helicopter Eela (2018)”. He hosted the popular “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” series and “The Voice India”.

Controversies

In 2018, during a concert in Assam, there were unsubstantiated claims of audience members throwing objects at him. Shaan denied these claims. In 2010, he had a public disagreement with Mika Singh on the reality show “Music Ka Maha Muqqabla”.
