Neeta Lulla was born on Friday, March 5, 1965 (age 59 as of 2024), in Mumbai. Her zodiac sign is Pisces. Growing up in Ahmedabad, she was a tomboy, less interested in academics and more drawn to extracurricular activities. While her mother worried about her grades, her father supported her athletic pursuits. To nurture her reading habits, he gifted her popular magazines like “Seventeen” and “Cosmopolitan,” sparking an interest in fashion and Bollywood’s connection to it. To avoid further schooling, Neeta married young. However, her husband encouraged her to complete her education, leading her to pursue a Diploma in Pattern Making and Garment Manufacture from Mumbai’s SNDT University. There, Hemant Trivedi mentored her in makeup, fashion choreography, and styling.

Career

Neeta’s career began assisting fashion choreographer Jeanne Naoroji for two and a half years. Simultaneously, she received a lecturing offer from her college. However, she opted to establish her own business, starting in a single room at home with one worker and a sewing machine. After gaining experience, her brother-in-law (a producer) provided her with an opportunity to design for the Bollywood film “Tamacha.” While successful, her breakthrough came with “Lamhe” (1991).

Before achieving mainstream recognition, she designed for major Bollywood films, including “Manikarnika,” “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun,” “Darr,” “Khal Nayak,” and “Taal.” Her costume designs for Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in “Devdas” (2002) brought her immense popularity. Her clientele expanded to include numerous Bollywood actresses, such as Juhi Chawla, Shilpa Shetty, Salma Azad, Isha Koppikar, and Sridevi. Her work extended beyond Bollywood to international films like “One Night With The King,” “Mistress of Spices,” “Bride & Prejudice,” and “Provoked.”

In 2014, she collaborated with Subhash Ghai to launch “The Whistling Wood International Neeta School of Fashion” in Mumbai, offering courses in fashion, online marketing, and merchandising.
