Amrapali Kata was born on Thursday, November 4, 1982, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her early education was at Sai Satya Mandir School, Visakhapatnam. She then excelled academically, securing a place at an IIT for her B.Tech in Chennai. Following this, she pursued an MBA from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore. Amrapali Kata is the daughter of Venkat Reddy Kata and Padmavathi. Her father was a professor at Andhra University. She has a sister who works in the Karnataka Revenue Department. On February 18, 2018, she married IPS officer Sameer Sharma. The couple currently does not have children.

Career

Amrapali Kata’s exceptional academic achievements continued into her professional life. She cleared the UPSC exam in 2010, achieving a remarkable 39th rank among a highly competitive pool of candidates. This achievement marked her as one of the youngest candidates to succeed in this challenging examination.

Her career progressed rapidly. She served as the Sub-collector of Vikarabad, Telangana in 2013, followed by her appointment as the Director of the Women and Child Welfare Department in 2014. In 2015, she took on the role of Joint Collector of Ranga Reddy District, Telangana. A significant milestone arrived in 2016 when she became the District Collector of Warangal Urban District, Telangana—a first for a woman in that position.

Her dedication to public service is evident in her proactive approach to addressing critical societal issues such as inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene, and unsafe water. To raise awareness and encourage solutions, she actively distributed books titled “Economics of Sanitation”. She also served as a private secretary to the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, G. Kishan Reddy.

Controversy

In 2018, a minor controversy arose following a Republic Day speech where she was criticized in the media for briefly laughing and fumbling over some Telugu words.

Facts

Before entering government service, Amrapali Kata worked at ABN AMRO Bank after completing her Master’s degree. Her brother-in-law is also an IAS officer. Remarkably, her admirers even installed an idol of her in Warangal, depicting her holding Lord Ganesha.
