Balraj Syal was born on Wednesday, January 26, 1983 (age 39 years as of 2022), in Jalandhar, Punjab. His zodiac sign is Aquarius. He completed his schooling at Shree Parvati Jain Co-Education Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar, followed by an arts graduation from the same city. His early life was marked by the loss of his parents at a young age, leading him to be raised by his paternal uncle and aunt.

Career

His journey into comedy began during his college years when he joined a theatre group. His acting mentor, Amit Sharma, encouraged him to audition for the comedy show, “Hasde Hasande Ravo” (2009), airing on MH1. This marked the start of his successful career. He subsequently appeared in numerous TV shows, including “Ikk Tara Bole,” “Music Online,” “Desi Talk,” and “Lots of Ladies.”

His career also includes participation in “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge” (though he was eliminated in the first round), and a win in “Laughter Ke Phatke” (Star One), where he earned the “Best Stand-up Comedian Trophy”. His acting debut was in the Punjabi film “Dharti” (2011), leading to roles in other Punjabi films such as “Kabaddi Once Again” (2012) and “Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22” (2013).

Beyond acting, he’s showcased his talents as a scriptwriter for several Punjabi films, including “Ambarsariya” (2016), “Sardarji 2” (2016), “Jindua” (2017), and “Anakh” (2017). He’s also a seasoned TV show host. His television appearances continued with “Entertainment Ki Raat,” “The Great Punjabi Comedy Show,” “Hasde Hasande Ravo 2,” and “Mujhse Shaadi Karoge” (both in 2020), and “Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 10”.

His accomplishments include winning “Comedy Ka Maha Muqabla” (2014), the “Big Punjabi Rising Star Award” for Best Comedian (2011), and the Hindustan Times’ “30 Under 30” award (2013). He also contributed as a creative writer for “Comedy Nights With Kapil” (2013) and won the 7th Times of India Film Awards (TIIFA) in 2018. He has also participated in various seasons of “Box Cricket League”.

Facts/Trivia

Balraj initially aspired to become an IAS or IPS officer but had to alter his plans due to financial constraints within his family. He briefly worked selling clothes to support his family before pursuing his education further. Even after achieving success in comedy, he faced financial challenges and reportedly sold a prize-winning car to cover expenses. He’s made guest appearances on shows like Bigg Boss Season 11 (2017) and values his friendships, particularly with actor Suyyash Rai and considers Rajiv Thakur as his mentor.

His personal interests include traveling and listening to music, which is even reflected in a travel-themed tattoo on his arm. He is known to enjoy socializing and is often seen at parties.
