Career

A 1985 batch IAS officer from the Gujarat cadre, Mr. Murmu’s career is marked by significant contributions to the Gujarat government. He held several key positions, including:

  • Commissioner of Mines and Minerals
  • Managing Director of the Gujarat Maritime Board
  • Joint Secretary of Law and Order in Gujarat
  • Managing Director of the Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation (GIIC)
  • Principal Secretary to Narendra Modi (during Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat)

His close association with Narendra Modi continued after Modi became Prime Minister. Mr. Murmu served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance in 2014. His expertise was further utilized in 2019 when he was appointed as the Expenditure Secretary of India and played a key role in the Union Budget team under Nirmala Sitharaman.

A pivotal moment in his career was his appointment as the first Lieutenant Governor of the newly formed Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir on October 31, 2019. He resigned from this position on August 5, 2020, and was subsequently appointed as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG) on August 6, 2020.
