Biography/Wiki

Nazir Wani was born in 1980 (age 38 at the time of his death) in Cheki Ashmuji village, Kulgam Tehsil, Kashmir. Initially involved with a militant group, he later surrendered to the Indian Army. He actively participated in counter-insurgency operations, playing a crucial role in eliminating terrorism in the Kashmir Valley. Before joining the military, he was an Ikhwan – a member of a group of former militants who renounced violence.

Family, Wife & Children

Wani hailed from a Kashmiri Muslim family with three younger brothers. He was married to Mahajbeen, a teacher, and is survived by her and his two sons: Athar Nazir (20 years old) and Shahid Nazir (18 years old at the time of his death).

Career

After surrendering, Nazir Wani dedicated himself to fighting terrorism. His invaluable intelligence about militant activities greatly assisted the Army. His contributions led to his recruitment into the Territorial Army’s 162 Battalion (Rashtriya Rifles) in 2004.

He played a key role in several significant operations:

Operation Augam (January 7, 2007): Provided crucial intelligence leading to the elimination of four Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) terrorists.
Operation Watengoo (November 14, 2017): His information led to the elimination of one HM terrorist and the capture of one HM and one LeT terrorist.

His bravery and service were widely acknowledged in the Kashmir Valley.

Death

On November 25, 2018, Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani was martyred during an encounter in Hirapur village, near Batagund, Shopian District, South Kashmir. Six militants from Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba were eliminated in the same operation. Wani sustained injuries during the combat and succumbed to them at the 92 Base Hospital. He was given full military honors, including a 21-gun salute.
