Hailing from a Hindu Rajput family, Rajnath Singh’s father, Rambadan Singh, was a farmer, and his mother, Gujarati Devi, a homemaker. He is married to Savitri Singh and they have three children: two sons, Pankaj Singh (the eldest, also a politician) and Neeraj Singh; and a daughter, Anamika Singh.
Career
His political journey commenced in 1969 as the organizational secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Gorakhpur. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the ABVP’s General Secretary of Mirzapur in 1972.
Entering mainstream politics in 1974, he served as the General Secretary of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh in Mirzapur and later as the District President. His involvement in the Jai Prakash Narayan movement led to his first imprisonment during the Emergency.
Elected as an MLA in the UP Assembly in 1977, he steadily climbed the political ladder. Key positions included State Secretary of the UP BJP (1983), State Chief of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morch (BJYM), and eventually, National President of the BJYM (1988). In 1998, he authored a book, “Unemployment – Its Reasons and Remedies”.
His election as an MLC in 1998 and subsequent appointment as the Education Minister of UP in 1991 marked a turning point. His notable “Anti-Copying Act” of 1992 garnered widespread appreciation. He served as an MP in the Rajya Sabha (1994) and Chief Whip of the BJP. He also served as the President of the UP BJP (1997) and held various ministerial positions at the national level, including Union Minister of Surface Transport, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and Union Minister of Agriculture and Food Processing.
Elected as an MP from the Lucknow Lok Sabha Constituency in 2014, he became the Union Home Minister under Narendra Modi. In 2019, he was sworn in as the Union Minister of Defence and continued serving in this role in Modi’s subsequent governments. He successfully contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow and was reappointed as Defence Minister.
