His family later moved to Kolkata due to his father’s work at Hindustan Motors. He attended a Hindi high school there. Initially aiming for IIT Kharagpur and then IIT Kanpur, family circumstances led him to pursue a B.Com and later an M.A. in Philosophy. He successfully cleared the UPSC exam on his first attempt in 1983, launching his IPS career.

His career highlights include a key role in the apprehension of Abu Salem and Monica Bedi in 2005. In 2016, he became DGP of Madhya Pradesh, implementing significant reforms. These included technological advancements like the Dial 100 system, establishing the ATS and STF, and even creating the first official Twitter account for the MP Police. He also received specialized training in crisis management and hostage negotiation from the USA and had a brief stint with the Intelligence Bureau.

He faced a brief period of leave in 2018 for bypass surgery. Following this, he was transferred to the position of Chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation before his appointment as CBI Director on February 2, 2019.
