Shankar Mahadevan was born on Friday, March 3, 1967 (age 56 as of 2023), in Chembur, Mumbai. He completed his schooling at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School and Swami Vivekananda High School in Chembur. In 1988, he earned a degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering from the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology, Navi Mumbai. His musical journey began early; by age 5, he was proficient on the harmonium and veena. He received classical Hindustani music training under the guidance of Pandit Shrinivas Khale.
He also had the privilege of learning Carnatic Classical Music from the esteemed TR Balamani. His mentor, TR Balamani, initially found him mischievous and even described him as “useless” due to his frequent truancy and neglecting practice to focus on other pursuits.
