Smriti’s cricketing journey began early. At just 9 years old, she was selected for the Maharashtra U-15 team. By 11, she was playing for the Maharashtra U-19 team (2007). Her Test debut came on August 13, 2014, against England Women. She made her ODI debut on April 10, 2013, against Bangladesh Women, and her T20 debut on April 5, 2013, also against Bangladesh Women. A significant highlight of her career was in February 2023 when Royal Challengers Bangalore purchased her for a record-breaking Rs 3.4 crore at the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction.

Facts

Smriti’s family boasts a strong cricketing legacy. Inspired by her brother’s participation in Maharashtra state U-16 tournaments, she pursued the sport. Her early training involved her father gently lobbing balls to her during her brother’s practice sessions.

In 2013, she achieved a remarkable feat, becoming the first Indian woman to score a double century in a one-day game, smashing 224 runs off just 150 balls in a U-19 West Zone tournament. She consistently showcased her talent, becoming the highest run-scorer in the Women’s Challenger Trophy 2016 with three centuries in as many matches (192 runs total).

Smriti’s achievements also extend internationally; she was one of the first two Indian players to feature in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in 2017, playing for the Brisbane Heat.
