Vittal Bapurao Khote, better known as Viju Khote, was born on Monday, December 17, 1941, in Bombay Presidency, British India. His zodiac sign was Sagittarius. He received his education at St. Sebastian’s Gaon High School in Mumbai, following which he completed his graduation. He hailed from a Hindu family with a strong theatrical background.

His father, Nandu Khote, was a renowned stage and silent film actor, influencing Viju’s path into the world of entertainment. His sister, Shubha Khote, also achieved success as a Bollywood and television actress. Adding to the family’s legacy, his aunt was the late actress Durga Khote, and his niece is the television actress Bhavna Balsavar. Viju Khote married Nimma, and they had two sons: Sunil Khote and Lucky Khote.

Career

Viju Khote’s acting career followed his sister’s established path. He worked extensively in both Hindi and Marathi cinema. His debut film was Ya Malak (1964), produced by his father. His career spanned over three hundred films! Some notable films include:

While capable of portraying negative roles, he gravitated towards comedic characters, finding them more fulfilling. His last film, Jaane Kyun De Yaaron, was released in 2018.

Death

Viju Khote passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 30, 2019, at 6:55 am in Mumbai. He suffered from multiple organ failure. His final rites were performed at Chandan Wadi, Mumbai.

Facts

Before his acting career took off, Viju Khote ran a printing press. Interestingly, he reportedly received only ₹2500 for his iconic role as Kaalia in Sholay (1975). He greatly admired the Bollywood actor Sanjeev Kumar, appreciating his humility. During the filming of Sholay, Sanjeev Kumar stayed at the same hotel as Viju and other cast members, a stark contrast to other stars.
