Rathour’s first-class cricket debut came in 1985, representing the Punjab Cricket Team against the Services Cricket Team. A key member of the Punjab Cricket Team, he contributed to their Ranji Trophy victory in 1992.

His ODI debut followed on April 15, 1996, against Pakistan in Sharjah, and his Test debut on June 6, 1996, against England. He played a total of six Test matches and seven ODIs, scoring 131 runs in Tests and 193 runs in ODIs, with two half-centuries.
